419GRASS BERMUDA MAINTENANCE SHEET 2008

                                                  (Applies to all Bermuda Grasses)

As a general rule soil analysis should be done at least every three years on home lawns. This is done by taking random soil from around the yard, mixing these thoroughly and taking about a pint of soil to the extension service. They will analyze the soil and make recommendations as to any amendments needed.

FERTILIZATION

Feb. 15     Apply a pre-emergent chemical such as Atrazine or Ronstar for prevention of weeds. If turf is over-seeded with cool season grass, timing of pre- emergents will be different.

Mar. 31    If over-seeding has been done, steps should be taken to remove cool season grass whether by chemical or cultural means. Aeration is also recommended yearly when grass is actively growing.

April 15   Begin fertilization with a complete fertilizer (1 lb of Nitrogen/ 1000 sq ft) once danger of frost has past. If soil amendments were recommended by a soil analysis, use appropriate materials. Continue fertilization every 15 days altering between complete formula and ammonium nitrate (34-0-0) at the rate of 1 lb of N1 000 sq ft. continue this until Bermuda grass has recovered from winter damage.

July & August    Apply slow release fertilizer @ 1 lb of N/ 1000 sq ft.

Oct 15    Apply   5-20-20 @ a rate of 1 lb of P & K/1000 sq ft to winterize.

WEED AND PEST CONTROL
Throughout the growing season watch out for pests (worms, mole crickets etc) and apply insecticide as needed. If weeds become a problem there are a number of chemicals available. Be sure to follow label directions strictly.

MOWING
Bermuda grass is a rampant grower and will require mowing every 3 to 4 days to prevent it from overgrowing. This will vary depending on the amount of fertilizer applied and the amount of rainfall or irrigation.

IRRIGATION
This is a very drought tolerant grass. It will go into dormancy if it doesn't get timely irrigation but will green up when water is applied. In a high maintenance situation it is advisable to irrigate enough to prevent the grass from becoming stressed. Never irrigate to the point of standing water or runoff.
