As a general rule soil analysis should be done at least every three years on home lawns. This is done by taking random samples of soil from around the yard, mixing these thoroughly and taking about a pint of soil to the extension service'. They will analyze the soil and make recommendations as to any amendments needed.

FERTILIZATION

April 15 & June 15 Apply slow release fertilizer such as 15-0-15 at the rate of 6 lbs of material per 1000 sq ft.

Sept 15 Apply a winterizer such as 0-0-20 at the rate of 5 lbs. of material per 1000 sq ft.

MOWING
Centipede is a relatively slow grower. Generally it should be mowed every 7-10 days at a height of 1-2 inches. Scalping is not a serious problem to established centipede. Newly installed lawns should be mown carefully to prevent damage.

WEED AND PEST CONTROL
Weed control is best achieved with the use of a pre-emergence (Atrazine) in Mid-February. Post emergence weed problems can be handled by numerous chemicals. Care should be taken that whatever chemical applied is labeled safe for use on Centipede.

Insect problems are fairly unusual in Centipede, however occasionally it may be necessary to apply an insecticide if activity is detected to the point of damage.

IRRIGATION
Irrigate as needed. This is a drought tolerant grass that should be allowed to dry out between irrigation cycles. Never water to the point of standing water or runoff.

DISEASE CONTROL
While diseases are not a big problem in Centipede lawns, it does occasionally pop up especially in heavy, poorly drained soils. Watch out for fading or yellowing irregularly shaped circles (most often Brown patch). Prompt attention and treatment with a fungicide is very important to prevent long term damage.
