Cobalt™ St. Augustine is the newest generation of St. Augustinegrass, developed through nearly 20 years of research by Texas A&M AgriLife Research in partnership with Sod Solutions. Using advanced breeding techniques, researchers combined the best qualities of parent lines to create a turf that is darker, denser, and more resilient than traditional St. Augustine varieties.
One of Cobalt’s biggest advantages is its exceptional drought tolerance and water efficiency, allowing it to maintain a lush, green appearance with less irrigation. It also offers excellent shade performance, thriving in partial tree cover or filtered light, and has proven cold hardiness for zone 8a and warmer. Cobalt shows improved tolerance to many common pests and diseases, making it a reliable and sustainable choice for homeowners and professionals alike.
Visually, Cobalt stands out with its rich, dark green color and broad leaf blades, producing a thick, uniform turf that’s both attractive and durable. Its vigorous stolon growth ensures quick establishment and long-term density, whether used in residential lawns, commercial landscapes, or parks. Maintenance is simple: mow at 2.0–2.5 inches during active growth, avoid cutting more than one-third of the blade, and water about one inch per week including rainfall.
